Group Exercise Classes

West Side Y Aquatics

Aquatics Activities offered at the YMCA 
We offer a variety of aquatics programming in our two pools. Learn more about how to stay up to date with our mobile app, what to bring, and our updated swim policies.

Large Pool Stats
Temperature is maintained at 81 degrees or lower
25 yards long
70 lengths (35 laps) = 1 Mile

Small Pool Stats
Temperature is maintained at 88 degrees or higher
20 yards long
88 lengths (44 laps) = 1 Mile
Shallow end is up to 4 feet deep and the deep end is up to 8 feet deep

Lap Swim and Multi-Purpose Swim

Reservations are no longer required for swim sessions. Please be aware of the following swim policies:

  • Please bring your own towel and swim cap
  • Please take a shower before entering the pool
  • Teen swim is during Multi-purpose swim times in the Small Pool and Lap Swim times in the Large Pool for ages 12-17yrs old who can pass a swim test. Those who cannot pass a swim test may swim during Multi-purpose swim times only and must be accompanied by an adult 18 years and older in the water at all times.
  • Selected equipment is available to use. Please return when you are finished using.
  • Children age 2-12 are required to wear a mask at all times except when in the pool. Hooks are available to hang your mask while swimming.
  • Locker rooms are provided for your personal belongings. Please bring your own lock.
  • 5 people per lane circle swimming

  • YMCA Code of Conduct must be followed at all times.

 

Lap Swim: Lap swim is designed for more organized swimming up and down the length of the pool repeatedly-- circle swim only.

Multi-purpose Swim: Multi-purpose swim will be held in the small pool for Adult Rec, families and teens (during teen hours).  No lap swim allowed.

 

Swim Lessons

Swim Lessons: 

  • Private Lessons: 1:1 Instructor to Student Ratio
  • Parent/Child Classes: 1:5 Instructor to Parent/Child Ratio
  • Pre-School ( 3-5 years old): 1:5 Instructor to Child Ratio
  • School Age ( 5-12 years old): 1:6 Instructor to Child Ratio
  • Family & Friends Group Swim Lesson- Build your lesson with participants who are closest to you of varying ages and swim abilities with this 9-week program, 30-minute group lesson per week for 2-4 participants. Age range 6 months and older (Please note the children 6-36 months are required to have an adult join the group lesson, and the adult will count as a participant).

Swim Lesson Procedures

We are excited that you have made this important step in your child’s development of water safety! Thank you for choosing the Y to be the place for them to learn, grow and thrive in the water.  To ensure that your experience exceeds your expectations, we have a few tips to guide you through our department. Please note that there are several changes in our process to ensure we are following all safety procedures and guidelines.  

  • Give yourself 15-30 minutes prior to your class.
  • Only one adult per child may enter the facility per child.
  • Scan your program or membership card. If you do not have a program card please give yourself enough time to stop at our membership desk to obtain one.
  • Park all strollers and scooters by our 64th street entrance.
  • Families may use our Family Locker Room on the second floor.
  • Once changed and ready for your class, please wait on the second floor waiting area located outside of the family locker room. Your instructor will come to this area to check your child in.
  • Parents must wait in this area for the duration of the child’s class.
  • Please take a shower before entering the pool
  • Bring your own towel & swim cap
  • Selected equipment is available to use. Please return when you are finished using.
  • Non-vaccinated individuals, including children, are still required to wear a mask at all times except when showering or swimming. Hooks will be available outside the shower and on the pool deck to hang your mask.
  • Children ages 0-11 yrs old must be accompanied with an adult member 18 years and older and in the water at all times
  • Teens ages 12-17yrs old who cannot pass a swim test must be accompanied by an adult 18 years and older and in the water at all times.

Basketball

Our basketball courts are now open for both shoot-around and games. Please see below for a description of the activities. To see current schedule please visit our online app schedule. 

Adult Open Gym (no reservation required, first come first serve) For members 18 years and older. Members under the age of 12 must be accompanied by an adult.

Family Gym (no reservation required, first come first serve) 
Families with children under of the age of 12, children must be accompanied by an adult. Adults must have a child under the age of 12 who is on their Family Membership.

HERE’S WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW:

Racquetball, Squash & Handball

App reservations are still required to use the 6th floor courts! Download the Y's mobile app and create an account to reserve a 45 minute slot on the courts to play racquetball or squash. Please bring your own equipment.

Teen Members or Teen on a Family Membership
You can come during the Facility hours:

Teen on a Family Membership
You can also come anytime the Y is open, as long as you are with an adult from your family membership.

All teens ages 12 through 17 are required to complete a fitness equipment orientation before using the fitness equipment. Contact Jonathan to make an appointment.
