The Flatbush YMCA of Greater New York is seeking an Older Adults Food Service Worker, who, under the supervision of the Program Director, will be responsible for preparing and serving lunch and snacks, as per a pre-existing/planned menu based on Department for the Aging nutritional guidelines. The Food Service Worker is responsible for assisting in the maintenance and cleanliness of the kitchen and related facilities and equipment, and ensures operational compliance with City, State, and Federal health regulations and licenses.

Key Responsibilities:

Programmatic:

  • Assist in the preparation and serving of hot and cold food; heat, pan and arrange food items.
  • Serve as part of a team to assemble various food items and ingredients as assigned; package and wrap food items according to established procedures and portion control standards; assure proper temperature of foods.
  • Prepare salads, sandwiches, fruits, vegetables, packaged foods, bakery items and other foods for distribution, label and date open food products.
  • Serve meals on serving lines; set out prepared foods; replenish containers as necessary; assist with setting up dining area; assist with catering activities.
  • Clean and sanitize work areas, tables, serving counters, tables, chairs and food containers, count and set-up plates, trays and utensils.
  • Operate standard food service equipment such as warmers, ovens, sealer and packing machines.
  • Follow established health, safety and sanitation principles applicable to food serving and kitchen maintenance.
  • Stock condiments, food items and paper goods and supplies in storage areas.
  • Prepare and maintain logs and records; inventory food and supplies; track food for daily production logs.
  • Maintain food service facilities, equipment and utensils in a clean and sanitary condition; sweep and mop floors to assure a safe and sanitary work environment; wash trays, pots, pans, plates, utensils and other serving equipment.
  • Attend meetings, in-service training and workshops as assigned.
  • Other duties as assigned.

  • Model the best practices of hospitality and positive culture.
  • This position supports all aspects of programming, including but not limited to community outreach, recruitment and participant outreach.
  • Work enthusiastically as part of a team.
  • Actively participate in training sessions, designated meetings, and special events.


Desired Skills & Experience:

  • High school Diploma/G.E.D or equivalent.  
  • Minimum of 1 year experience working with Older Adults. 
  • Valid Food Handler’s License.
  • ​Current CPR/AED/First Aid.
  • ​Working knowledge of nutritional guidelines for Older Adults.
  • ​Basic food preparation including washing, cutting and assembling food items and ingredients.
  • Basic kitchen utensils and equipment.
  • Proper lifting techniques.
  • Packaging and distribution of large quantities of food.
  • Sanitation principles applicable to food serving and kitchen maintenance.
  • Quantify food preparation and handling.
  • Ability and interest in working with diverse populations.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, e-mail, Internet and database administration.
  • Must be a self-starter, highly organized, patient and able to work well with others.
  • Must be willing to work as part of a team and be able to establish positive relationships with participants, the community, collaborators and partnerships.
  • Must be available to work Monday - Friday, 9:00 am - 1:00 pm.
