The Jamaica YMCA is seeking a Maintenance Worker/Porter who, under the direct supervision of the Building Engineer, will be responsible for cleaning and sanitizing assigned areas, including such duties as mopping, dusting, and trash removal. The Maintenance Worker/Porter will also be required to complete duties related to window washing, meeting set-up, pool cleaning, snow removal, groundskeeping, maintenance repairs, and other related responsibilities.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Ensure the building is attractive and clean by completing all duties listed on the daily schedule and maintains upkeep of assigned area and equipment.

  • May be required to perform wet and dust mopping, dusting, trash removal, recycling, window washing, pool cleaning, painting, vacuuming, seasonal activities dealing with lawn care and snow removal, and general cleaning.

  • Operates related motorized and non-motorized equipment.

  • Records and reports all needed repairs; repairs as directed.

  • Basic handyman skills: locksmith, light plumbing, light electrical, carpentry work, and boiler, as well as pool inspection.

  • Ensures the entire building and property is secure during shift and report incidents and hazardous conditions to supervisor.

  • Replaces soap, paper towels and other supplies.

  • May be required to set up furniture and/or rooms for events.

  • Strip and wax floors, also shampoo rugs as needed.

  • Follow standards of DOH, DOB, FDNY, HPD and ECB Departments.

  • Follow YMCA Housekeeping Policies and Procedures.

  • Flexible Schedule, open to working nights and weekends.

  • Supervise overnight On-Point cleaning crew/supervise security and FLSD (Fire Life Safety Director) on duty.

  • Monitor residential activities.


Desired Skills & Experience:

  • High School diploma or equivalent.

  • One (1) year to three (3) years of related experience.

  • Knowledge of cleaning methods and equipment, along with basic understanding of the upkeep and care of equipment.

  • Understanding of cleaning compounds and chemicals, and their safe, efficient use.

  • Obtain YMCA Housekeeping Certificate within 1 year of attaining position.
