The Bedford-Stuyvesant YMCA is looking for a Fitness Center Essentials Coach who will oversee fitness areas and provide outstanding service to ensure a positive and safe user experience.

Guide beginner exercisers through the YMCA Fitness Center Essentials and provide outstanding service to ensure a positive member experience. The goal of the Fitness Center Essentials program is to assist members in making a healthy lifestyle change and to build self-esteem.  Assisting members through this process by providing personalized attention, support and motivation, and education and instruction will lead to member engagement and retention.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Understand and lead the client through the Fitness Center Essentials program.

  • Provide outstanding service to all members and guests.  Outstanding service is acting as a proactive agent - initiating a professional relationship with the members regarding their needs, concerns, and questions and acting as an agent to accommodate the member’s needs/concerns.

  • Understand and be able to discuss and promote all YMCA programs.

  • Contact members on a weekly basis to follow-up on the progression of their fitness program.

  • Be able to answer members' questions, concerns, and complaints in a timely and courteous manner.

  • Provide members with opportunities that will increase their involvement, sense of belonging, and ownership of the YMCA.

  • Assist members in effectively utilizing fitness equipment.

  • Maintain required certifications, tracked in Club Connect.

  • Actively participate in training sessions and designated meetings.

  • Have a thorough knowledge of branch emergency procedures and take appropriate action for emergency situations.

  • Support community and promotional special events as needed.


Desired Skills & Experience:

  • High School diploma or equivalent desirable.

  • Minimum age – 18 years old.

  • Experience working in a health and fitness environment.

  • Adult CPR / First Aid / AED certifications.

  • Orientation to Healthy Living at the Y.

  • Foundations of Listen First.

  • Principles of Member Health & Wellness.

  • Foundations of Strength and Conditioning.

  • Fitness Center Essentials Training.

  • Attend current service training within 90 days of hire.

  • Excellent customer service skills.
