The Harlem YMCA is seeking a Director of Membership & Healthy Lifestyles who, under the supervision of the Executive Director, will be responsible for management of the Membership, Healthy Lifestyles, and Youth Sports departments at the Harlem YMCA. This includes overall development, administration, supervision, and evaluation of each department with a focus on quality and fundraising to expand programming to meet the needs of the community. 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Create a positive member experience and serve as a role model for all staff.

  • Work proactively to meet members needs and address questions and concerns.

  • Develop, control and track departmental budgets in accordance with branch and association guidelines.

  • Analyze membership data and statistics in order to identify trends and make proactive decisions that will drive membership and program growth. 

  • Lead collaboration between membership and program to increase overall participation. 

  • Plan and create new and innovative adult, youth and family programs that meet the needs of the community in keeping with the Branch priority objectives and strategic plan.

  • Build the branch value proposition based in program and services in order to grow membership. 

  • Set annual priority objectives to improve the member experience.

  • Analyze community demographics to provide innovative programming that serves the community and identify local marketing opportunities unique to the area. 

  • Research, facilitate and build quality programs that build member retention and provide member satisfaction.

  • Work collaboratively with the branch staff to develop new programs.

  • Successfully maintain and continue to improve the quality of all adult, youth and family programming.

  • Adhere to Association Healthy Lifestyles, Youth Sports, Membership and Communication standards and guidelines.

  • Recruit, select, develop, train and supervise staff and volunteers.

  • Train and hold membership staff accountable for handling membership inquiries by telephone and in person.

  • Uphold all association policies and demonstrate core values of respect, responsibility, caring, and honesty.

  • Assist in Annual Campaign effort.  Assist in fundraising efforts and annual sustaining campaigns with a focus on Members as Donors.

  • Develop and grow community partnerships.  Work within the community to foster a positive image of the YMCA to encourage good public relations.

  • Represents the Branch at Membership and Healthy Lifestyles cabinets.

  • Maintain required certifications, tracked in Club Connect. Attend trainings, seminars and conferences as required. Conduct trainings as required by YMCA association and adhere to Association Healthy Lifestyles standards and guidelines.

  • Become a certified trainer in at least 1 area and lead training events.

  • Have a thorough knowledge of branch emergency procedures and take appropriate action for emergency situations.

  • Set annual priority objectives to

  • improve service based on annual staff evaluations or customer evaluation/feedback.

  • Serve on the branch leadership team for strategic planning and operations management.

  • Directs the scheduling, management, maintenance and repair of facilities and equipment pertaining to healthy lifestyles areas (in partnership with the building department).

  • Work with the Board of Managers.


Desired Skills & Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in related field or equivalent work experience.

  • Minimum of one (1) to two (2) years of experience supervising community-based programs and developing programs.

  • Minimum of three (3) years of management experience.

  • Knowledge of development and administration of youth and adult programs.

  • Knowledge of Principles of Member Health & Wellness, fitness trends, and fitness equipment.

  • Foundations of Listen First, Strength and Conditioning, and Group Exercise.

  • Orientation to Healthy Lifestyles at the Y.

  • Knowledge of: AS400, budgeting, public policy, trainer, CPR/First Aid, a plus.

  • Excellent hospitality, interpersonal and communications skills.
