5 Fitness Classes You Can’t Miss This Fall
22 August 2018
Summer vacation may be over. But don’t count out fall. This is a perfect time to focus on your health and well-being and commit to a new fitness routine.
At New York City’s YMCA, we offer more than 1,200 fitness classes every week at our 22 branches. Here are five classes you can’t miss this fall in each of the five boroughs.
- Bronx: Cardio Kickboxing
First developed in the early 90s by trainer Frank Thiboutot as a way to promote the sport while encouraging fitness, cardio kickboxing blends athletic drills with martial arts to create an intense cardio workout. The Bronx YMCA’s Stephene Johnson will kick you into shape twice a week with her intense 30-minute class.
When: Tuesday, 7-7:30pm and Thursday, 6-6:30pm
- Brooklyn: Dodge YMCA’s Retro Dance Party
Grab your sweat bands and step back in time with Retro Dance Party at the Dodge YMCA. Set to your favorite retro tunes, former Broadway dancer James Martinelli’s class features fun and easy dance moves that will keep your heart pumping. Great for all ages and levels
When: Tuesday, 12:30-1:15pm and Thursday, 10:55-11:55am
- Manhattan: Insanity at Chinatown
How about a workout where you can burn 1,000 calories in an hour? Try an Insanity class. The interval training session keeps you working at your absolute max for 3 to 5-minute blocks, with short breaks. Check it out with Mark Seto at the Chinatown Y.
When: Tuesday, 8:00-9:00pm and Thursday, 7:00-7:45pm
- Staten Island: Pickleball?!
Invented in 1965, and named after the creator’s dog, pickleball is ping pong meets tennis. And it’s the fastest growing sport in America. It’s easy on the body while still offering a great workout. And it draws people of all ages and ability levels. Dozens play every day at the Broadway and South Shore YMCAs in Staten Island. There are also leagues at the Cross Island and Rockaway Ys.
When: Days and times vary. Contact branch for details.
- Queens: Soca AFRO-bics at Ridgewood
Soca, which stands for “soul of calypso,” is a genre of Caribbean music that originated in Trinidad and Tobago in the 1970s. Today, Soca music has become a staple of dance workouts across NYC. At the Ridgewood YMCA, Kiara Ross’s high-intensity class fuses African and Caribbean dance, Soca music, and aerobics.
