Sakhawat & Isha's Story "We’ve learned to navigate a challenging world."WEST SIDE YMCAY ROWE SCHOLARS, LEADERS CLUBAt the Y, we found more than a place to hang out—we found opportunity, support, and a community that sees us.Sakhawat: I’ve been coming since freshman year, starting with Teen Center and growing into Rowe Scholars and Leaders Club. I’ve met people from all walks of life here. We’ve had real conversations—about school, politics, even healthcare access. As the child of immigrants, I’ve seen how hard it can be for families to navigate those systems. That’s why I want to become a pediatrician and build a more inclusive healthcare system for people like my parents.Isha: I came for SAT prep after my guidance counselor told me about it. It was free, close to school, and gave me something positive to do on Wednesdays. But I ended up staying for the community. Now I come for college support, for leadership programs—and just to be around people who care. I’m a first-gen student, and the Y has helped me feel like college is actually possible. At the Y, we talk about burnout, mental health, and the pressure of growing up in a fast-paced city. We also laugh, lead, and learn—surrounded by people who push us to be our best. The West Side Y has helped us find our voices. Now we want to use them to make change.
