Falak's Story "I'm learning how to become the leader I aspire to be."CROSS ISLAND YMCALEADERS CLUBI didn’t walk into the Y thinking I’d become president of the Leaders Club. I was just 12, and my mom had started working there. I figured I’d check it out.But the moment I joined, I realized the Y is a place where everyone belongs. The Y taught me that being a leader isn’t about power—it’s about connection. It’s about helping others realize their own strength. I used to be quiet and unsure of myself. But now, thanks to the support of my counselor and the Y community, I’ve learned how to lead by being myself—and I’m proud of that.Through Leaders Club, I’ve made real friendships, learned how to speak up, and gained the confidence to reach out to others—whether I’m writing a professional email or guiding a team. I’ve learned that the journey matters just as much as the destination.Today, as president of my Leaders Club, I’m focused on making an impact—not just in the Y, but in my community. I want people to feel like they belong here. Because they do. MORE FROM FALAK
