The Harlem YMCA is seeking a Mechanic. Under direct supervision of the Property Manager, the Mechanic will be responsible for the maintenance and repair of HVAC, plumbing, electrical, and carpentry systems at the Harlem YMCA, as well as its off sites. Will perform building repair, maintenance and cosmetic upgrades as directed.  Will also clean and maintain the inside and outside of the Harlem YMCA and its off sites; including but not limited to the sidewalks, hallways, stairways, bathrooms, shower rooms, offices and all program areas.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Performs repairs as needed in plumbing, electrical, carpentry and swimming pool equipment (where applicable).

  • Performs building construction work as directed by branch leadership.

  • Cleans all bathrooms, classrooms, locker rooms, Fitness Center, Free Weight Room, offices, Gymnasium and in all other spaces within the branch.

  • Stores all deliveries, moves furniture, sets up and breaks down rooms and removes snow.

  • Strip and wax floors, also shampoos rugs as needed.

  • Informs Property Manager of all building issues.

  • Responsible for painting when assigned.

  • Follow standards of DOH, DOB, FDNY, HPD and ECB Departments.

Desired Skills & Experience:

  • High School diploma or equivalent required. 

  • Minimum of three (3) to five (5) years of maintenance and building construction work experience and progressive responsibility.

  • Knowledge of of cleaning methods and equipment, along with basic understanding of the upkeep and care of equipment.

  • Understanding of cleaning compounds and chemicals, and their safe, efficient use (MSOS).

  • Maintain FDNY, DOB, and DOH log books as required.

  • Must be able to maintain pool, including reading, repair and maintenance.

  • Obtain F07, F01 within 6 months (of attaining position); S95 within 1 year of obtaining position.

  • Obtain Must obtain S12, S13, F07 and C42 Pool Certification within 1 year (of attaining position).Subject to mid year and annual review.

  • Obtain Building Certification within 3 months (of attaining position).

  • Must obtain, and C42 or C91 Pool Certification within 6 months of obtaining position.  Subject to mid year and annual review.

  • Must be able to work flexible hours as well as overnight.  Must be on call 24/7 when Building Grounds Superintendent is not on-site.

  • Knowledge of the use of mechanical, test equipment.

  • Maintain and adjust controls, systems, preventative maintenance and repair.

  • Must be able to work evenings and weekends.
