Y ROWE SCHOLARS, TEENS TAKE THE CITY

I’ve been coming to the Park Slope Armory Y since I was a kid. At first, it was for gym class—our school was right down the block—but over time, the Y became like a second home. I made friends here that I still go to school with today, and I’ve built relationships that have shaped who I am.

Now, as a teen, I’ve gotten involved in programs like Teens Take the City and Rowe, which have helped me find my voice. I’ve learned to speak up, lead petitions, and advocate for change in my community—skills I never imagined I’d have. Volunteering at Y events has also helped me build confidence and communication skills I know I’ll carry into the future.

One of my biggest inspirations is Christian, who started as a floor staff worker and is now a manager. Watching him grow made me realize: I could do that too. I’m here all the time—why not give back and be a leader?

The Y has helped me grow from a quiet kid into someone who believes in their potential. I know now that every small step matters. You just have to trust the process.
