Naing, Phyo Thet Thet's Story "I only spoke Burmese. Now I have friends from all over the world."FLUSHING YMCANEW AMERICANS INITIATIVEI lived in Myanmar for over 40 years and spoke only Burmese. When I came to the United States with my daughter, everything was unfamiliar—new systems, new languages, new people. It was overwhelming. But then I found the Flushing Y, and everything started to change.I joined the NAI program to learn English because I wanted to build a better life here—for myself and especially for my daughter’s education. At first, reading and writing were easier than listening and speaking. But the teachers at the Y were so patient, so welcoming. They made me feel like I belonged, even when I struggled. They didn’t just teach me—they supported me.Now, I have friends from all over the world. I’m more confident speaking English, and I feel more connected to my community. I came here not knowing anyone—but through the Y, I’ve built a new circle of friendship and support. The Y helped me find my voice in a new country. And for that, I am truly grateful.
