Hop in the pool with your baby or toddler and help them learn to be comfortable in the water. Parents learn about water safety and drowning prevention.

Stage A Water Discovery

  • Age: 6 months-12 months
  • Class length: 30 minutes
  • Qualification: None needed
  • Adult participation: One parent or guardian per child must be in the pool for each lesson

The class introduces infants and toddlers to the aquatic environment through exploration.

  • Age: 12-36 months

  • Qualification: Child is comfortable in the water or child has taken Stage A Water Discovery

Focuses on exploring body positions, blowing bubbles, and fundamental safety and aquatic skills.

PRESCHOOL SWIM CLASSES
AGES 3-6.5 YEARS

Summer camper in front of pool

This progressive program teaches kids ages 3 to 6.5 water adjustment, basic swimming competency, and benchmark skills. Preschool students can progress through four stages of classes.

Stage 1 & 2 Water Acclimation & Movement

  • Age: 3-5 years, 5-6.5 years
  • Class length: 30 minutes
  • Qualification: None needed. This class is for kids who aren’t yet comfortable going under water voluntarily.
  • Skills Practiced:
    ○ Bob to submerge in water
    ○ Front and back glide to the wall for 5 feet with no help
    ○ Front and back float for 10 seconds with help
    ○ Roll from back to front and front to back with help
    ○ Jump, push, turn, grab with help
    ○ Swim, float, swim 10 feet with help
    ○ Exit the water

Preschoolers develop comfort with underwater exploration and are introduced to basic self-rescue skills performed with assistance.

    ○ Float on front and back unassisted

    ○ This class is for kids who are not able to swim 10-15 yards on their front and back.

    ○ Retrieve an object in chest-deep water

Swimmers build strength and endurance while refining technique and getting ready for competitive swim team. We work on self-confidence, goal setting, and team building during aquatic activities such as conditional swimming and water polo.

The Cross Island YMCA Barracudas compete against other YMCAs and swim clubs at area meets. Workouts include endurance, speed, and drill technique, with a healthy dose of teamwork and sportsmanship.

  • Class length: 1-2 hours, 1-5 times per week. Varies by age.
  • Qualification: Try outs required.
    • Tryouts are held in September
    • Tryouts for summer swim team will be held in June 2020

Group lessons aren't for everyone. A YMCA certified swim instructor could be just what you or your child needs to get comfortable in the water or achieve your swimming goals. Your lessons are designed to meet your specific needs.

Private Swim Lessons

YOUTH SWIM TEAM
AGES 6-18 YEARS

The Cross Island YMCA Barracudas compete against other YMCAs and swim clubs at area meets. Workouts include endurance, speed, and drill technique, with a healthy dose of teamwork and sportsmanship. 

Drills for free and backstroke improvement, as well as fly and breaststroke development. Team practice is in the Small Pool.

  • Age: 6-18 years
  • Class length: 1-2 hours, 1-5 times per week. Varies by age.
  • Qualification: Try outs required.
    • Tryouts are held in September
    • Tryouts for summer swim team will be held in June 2020
  • Season: September-June
  • Skills Practiced:
    ○ Swim conditioning
    ○ Refining technique for all strokes
    ○ Competitive starts, dives and flip turns
    ○ Racing technique

YMCA membership is required. There is a down payment and monthly draft. Fee includes meet entry fees, USS Membership, team bathing suit and awards.

Developmental

  • Age: 6-8 years
  • Class length: 2 hours, twice per week
  • Price: $455

Mini Cudas

  • Age: 8-10 years
  • Class length: 1-2.5 hours, 3x per week
  • Price: $765

Cudas

  • Age: 11-12 years
  • Class length: 1-2.5 hours, 3x per week
  • Price: $765

Blue Team

  • Age: 12-18 years
  • Class length: 2-3 hours, 5x per week
  • Price: $1,260

Green Team

  • Age: 13-18 years
  • Class length: 2-3 hours, 6x per week
  • Price: $1,380

Use the resistance and buoyancy of the water to improve your fitness in classes like aqua aerobics and arthritis water exercise. These classes are free for Y members.

Aqua Zumba®
Aqua Zumba® blends the Zumba® philosophy with water resistance, for one pool party you shouldn’t miss!

Water Aerobics
An instructional class of aerobic movements performed in the water, to improve cardiovascular fitness, and flexibility.

Water Walking
This gravity-defying exercise is a therapeutic aid for cardiovascular endurance and relief of stress. Highly recommended for people with arthritis, joint pain, and other physical ailments. No instruction.
