Y TEACHING KITCHEN

Hi, I’m Sofia Miles, and I’m 16 years old. I’ve been cooking since I was tall enough to stand at the stove—my mom had me helping in the kitchen when I was little, and after she was injured in 2020, I took over. That’s when I really fell in love with it. Cooking became more than just a skill—it became part of who I am.

Through the Teaching Kitchen at the Northeast Bronx Y, I found a place where I could grow those skills and connect with others. Chef Quie saw my potential right away and gave me the chance to help prep, lead, and even plate dishes for a 50-person dinner. Being his sous chef that day was one of the best experiences I’ve had—it made me feel seen and capable.

That summer, I launched Sofia’s Savory & Sweets, my own catering business. I started with a table at a farmers market, sold out on my first day, and even got to cater my first big event. Every time someone comes back for seconds, it reminds me I’m on the right path.

The Y has helped me believe in my future. I hope to one day be a private chef—maybe even on a yacht, traveling the world! But no matter where I go, I’ll always come back to the Y. It’s more than a place to learn—it’s a home full of people who believe in me.
