Hazel Alexander volunteering at Y Community Markets

"I saw where they needed some support, and I got started."

Y COMMUNITY MARKETS

I’ve lived in Coney Island for decades and spent my career as a special education teacher. After retiring, I wanted to stay active and connected—and the Y became that space for me. I came for exercise, for community, and just to be around people.

About four years ago, a staff member mentioned that the Y Community Market needed volunteers. I said yes, not realizing how much it would come to mean to me.

What started as a small act of service turned into a weekly commitment I look forward to. I’ve met so many of my neighbors through the market—some don’t speak English, but that doesn’t matter. We connect through smiles, helping hands, and shared moments. I’ve seen firsthand how many people rely on the market, and I’m grateful to play a part in something that brings our community together.

The Y gave me a new sense of purpose in this chapter of my life—and I’m proud to give back.
