After I lost my husband, everything changed. I thought we should visit family in Morocco, but the kids said, “No, no, please, this summer we need to go to the YMCA.”
“Camp is fun,” agreed both Sami and Yasmine. “Counselors are like family. They know when you’re having a good day, they know when you’re having a bad day.”
"After I lost my husband, everything changed. I thought we should visit family, but the kids said, “No, no, please, we need to go to the YMCA. The Y has helped Sami improve in athletics and academics, and it’s where Yasmine has made her best friends. And I don’t have to worry about their safety." - Khadija Moustaader |
The Y also helps them with their schoolwork. For Sami, kickball, basketball, soccer and running all helped improve his confidence in athletics, which in turn made him more comfortable in his academics.
And for Yasmine, the Y is where she’s made her best friends. “I’m usually a quiet person who doesn’t talk much,” said Sami. “But with the Y I’m not just sitting by myself - I talk more and am part of a community.”
