On Wednesday, June 17, the YMCA of Greater New York hosted its 2026 College Decision Day at John Jay College of Criminal Justice in New York City, celebrating 85 YMCA Rowe Scholar teens on their way to higher education and post-secondary opportunities.

The YMCA’s Rowe Scholars program is a free, citywide initiative that equips teens from across the five boroughs with comprehensive college and career guidance, helping them prepare for success after high school. This year, the Rowe Scholars program provided more than $69,000 in scholarships to 13 students.

At the event, students were joined by their family and Y staff as they announced the colleges they have committed to attending, including Princeton University, SUNY Albany, SUNY Binghamton, Hunter College, City College, Louisiana State University and Tuskegee University.

“At the YMCA, we believe every young person deserves access to the guidance and resources needed to pursue their goals,” said Sharon Greenberger, President and CEO, YMCA of Greater New York. “College Decision Day reflects years of hard work and growth by these remarkable seniors. Their achievements show what is possible when students have a strong support system to pursue their ambitions. We are proud to celebrate this year's Rowe Scholars and excited to see the impact they will make in their communities and beyond.”

“Through the Rowe Scholars program, I gained the guidance and encouragement needed to navigate the college application process with confidence,” said Alex Alvarado, a graduating Rowe Scholar attending Baruch College in the fall. “From learning about financial aid to receiving support on my applications, the program helped me make important decisions about my future. Looking back, this moment is a reminder of how much I've grown over the past four years. Receiving this scholarship makes me even more excited to begin college and take advantage of the opportunities ahead.”

The Rowe Scholars program has served tens of thousands of public and charter school students enrolled in grades 9-12 since 2009 – offering continued support throughout college and beyond. Rowe Scholars receive curriculum-based workshops, college tours, SAT/ACT test prep, career counseling and financial literacy. In 2025, 98% of Rowe Scholars graduated from high school (compared to a citywide average of 81%), and 85% of Rowe Scholars matriculated into college.
