New Yorkers Gathered at YMCA Branches Across the Five Boroughs to Discuss Key Issues in Their Neighborhoods and Learn More About Engaging in New York’s Elections

Over the past two weeks, the YMCA of Greater New York, in partnership with Con Edison, hosted five community convenings ahead of the general election in November to increase and sustain civic engagement, amplify community voices, and foster collaboration between community members, partners, and civic leaders.

Held at YMCA branches in each of the five boroughs, nearly 150 community members came together to share knowledge and identify ways to take meaningful civic action within their own communities. A civic action workshop and on-site voter registration co-facilitated by local partners were also provided. The convenings emphasized inclusive, intergenerational participation with a focus on communities where voter turnout has historically been low.

“We believe that strong communities are built through connection, understanding, and civic participation,” said Sharon Greenberger, President and CEO of the YMCA of Greater New York. “As a trusted community convener, we are proud to host gatherings across the five boroughs that spark conversations and create opportunities for change. These conversations will enable New Yorkers of all ages and backgrounds to actively engage in the democratic process. We are grateful for our partners at Con Edison for supporting us in hosting these convenings and boosting participation that will help shape New York City’s future.”

“Con Edison is committed to improving the quality of life in the communities it serves — beyond delivering reliable power to customers, it’s also helping energize civic participation and community connections,” said Hilary Ayala, Executive Director of the Con Edison Foundation and the Director of Strategic Partnerships Programs at Con Edison. “Partnering with the YMCA of Greater New York to bring neighbors together across the five boroughs is a high-impact way to foster conversations and keep New Yorkers engaged. We look forward to continuing our work with the YMCA to amplify the voice of every New Yorker.”

The community convenings increased awareness of the voting process and other civic pathways. Participants left with actionable insights on community priorities that can inform neighbors as well as YMCA advocacy and programming and be shared with local elected officials.

The YMCA of Greater New York and Con Edison will host additional convenings in January to gauge community members' civic actions and capacity for post-election engagement with newly elected officials on the issues that matter most in each community.
