The YMCA is committed to serving the newcomer/immigrant population of New York City. Our New Americans Welcome Center supports newcomers and immigrants in reaching their goals of employment, education, civic engagement, naturalization, cultural competence and upward mobility in the communities they live.


The New Americans Welcome Centers serve as multilingual information resource and referral centers and provides newcomers/immigrants, and their families, with a wide array of instructional, vocational, recreational, family support, and social services. Instructional services include English as a Second Language, Cultural Orientation, Citizenship Preparation, Job Readiness, and Computer Literacy. Some of our Centers offer Adult Basic Education (“ABE”) and High School Equivalency (“HSE”) classes. All services are free of charge.

About Our Classes

Beginner ESL & Literacy
Beginning instruction in vocabulary and structure of the English language. Students will learn basic skills necessary for reading, writing, and communicating in English.

ESL I & II
Instruction in vocabulary and structure of the English language. Students will develop basic proficiency in English with a focus on improving written and oral.

ESL III & IV
Intermediate instruction in English language conversation, reading, and writing. Students continue to develop fluency in English with a focus on learning more complex.

Computer Literacy & Job Readiness
Instruction in basic technology and workplace skills such as word processing, Excel, e-mail, internet search techniques, and resume-building. Whether you’re new to computers or are looking for a brush up—our computer literacy class is here for you. The 10-week course teaches computer fundamentals and navigation skills.

Citizenship Prep & US Civics
US civics for immigrants planning to apply for US citizenship. Students develop their English speaking skills as well as their knowledge of US history and government.

Conversational English (Amigos)
Intermediate/advanced level conversation group; students develop fluency by viewing and discussing episodes of the award-winning television show “We Are New York.”
