The Chinatown YMCA's New Americans Welcome Center serves as a multilingual information resource and referral center, and provides newcomers, immigrants, and their families with a wide array of instructional, vocational, recreational, family support, and social services.

Instructional services include:

  • English as a Second Language
  • Cultural Orientation
  • Citizenship Preparation
  • US Civics
  • Job Readiness
  • Computer Literacy
  • Healthcare Careers

Some of our centers offer Adult Basic Education (ABE) and High School Equivalency (HSE) classes. All services are free of charge. 

Free Classes

Spring classes at the Chinatown YMCA start Monday, April 6 and go through June 12, 2020.
 

Adult Literacy Education (ESOL)
Beginning instruction in vocabulary and structure of the English language. Students will learn basic skills necessary for reading, writing, and communicating in English.

Monday-Thursday
6-9 PM
 

Intermediate ESOL
Intermediate instruction in English language conversation, reading, and writing. Students continue to develop fluency in English with a focus on learning more complex vocabulary and grammar.

Tuesdays & Thursdays
6-9 PM
 

Advanced ESOL
Advanced level conversation group; students develop fluency in reading and writing and conversation.

Mondays & Wednesdays
6-9 PM
 

Citizenship Prep/US Civics
US civics for immigrants planning to apply for US citizenship. Students develop their English speaking skills as well as their knowledge of US history and government.

Mondays & Wednesdays
6-9 PM
 

Workplace English
Intermediate/advanced level conversation group; students develop their English speaking skills and learn necessary skills needed at workplace.

Free & Confidential Legal Immigration Services

CUNY Citizenship Now! and the YMCA's New Americans Initiative invite you to free legal immigration services at a location near you.

Experienced immigration attorneys and volunteers will help you with:

  • Immigration consultations
  • Application assistance: 
    • Naturalization
    • DACA Renewal
    • TPS Renewal
    • Fee Waiver

Events will be held the third Wednesday of every month.
