The Staten Island Broadway YMCA is seeking a Water Fitness Instructor who will display outstanding customer service, demonstrate YMCA Values and have an understanding of the YMCA Mission. The Water Fitness Instructor will conduct safe, fun, dynamic and effective water fitness classes based on the YMCA of Greater New York’s Healthy Lifestyles/Aquatic Safety Standards & Guidelines.  

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide a high degree of member service through a professional relationship with the members in regard to their needs, concerns, and questions about the YMCA, its programs and mission.

  • Have a thorough knowledge of branch emergency procedures and take appropriate action for Aquatics Department emergency situations.

  • Instruct safe and effective water fitness classes that meet the needs of all participants, modifying routines as necessary according to the fitness level of class participants.

  • Be prepared to teach in the water and on deck.

  • Incorporate different types of equipment & creative choreography into class.

  • Knowledge of anatomy and physiology and their relationship to the development of water fitness instruction.

  • Understand the physics of water resistance and its effects on participant movement.

  • Maintain required personal certifications.

  • Be up to date on current Health & Wellness/Aquatics programs and trends.

  • Notify supervisor and find appropriate coverage for class due to illness or emergency.

  • Responsible for being on time and in uniform (swimsuit, ID, etc.) for all scheduled classes.

  • Maintain attendance records of classes.

  • Attend training opportunities necessary for the position.

  • Actively participate in training sessions and designated meetings.


Desired Skills & Experience:

  • High School diploma or equivalent.

  • Experience in related field.

  • Current CPR/AED certifications.

  • YMCA Water Safety Instructor certification or equivalent.

  • YMCA Group Exercise Instructor certification or equivalent.

  • Y Aquatics Safety Assistant certification (required within 90 days of hire or have lifeguard certification).

  • Knowledge of YMCA Principles of Health & Fitness, Working with Older Adults, Older Adult Water Fitness Instructor, Arthritis Foundation YMCA Aquatic Program Instructor certifications are a plus.

  • Excellent customer service and communications skills.

  • Must be available to work flexible hours, including nights, weekends and holidays.
