The McBurney YMCA is seeking a qualified Swim Coach who will maintain safe conditions in and around the swim area at the McBurney YMCA. The Swim Coach will assist the Head Swim Coach in developing and implementing a successful plan for the Development Swim Team Group and promote a safe and positive atmosphere in accordance with YMCA Aquatics policies and procedures.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Must be Instructor/Coach Ready: uniform, lesson plans, maintain records (attendance, track progress, team entries, emergency contact and complete swim meet/end of session report)

  • Instruct participants according to YMCA aquatics program standards: setting specific goals for team participants, effective class organization and positive relationship with participants. 

  • Set up and run all practices and assist during “team tryouts”.

  • Ensure instructional equipment remains in good condition; have all equipment ready prior to classes and put away after.

  • Enforce aquatics safety rules consistently and fairly.

  • Promote other aquatics programs and have knowledge of pool schedule and programs.

  • Maintain positive relationships with class/team participants, parents, non-class/team members and staff.  

  • Know and understand the Emergency Action Plan and Emergency Evacuation Routes.

  • Follow the directions of the YMCA aquatic supervisors in accordance with YMCA aquatic standards.

  • Follow All YMCA of Greater New York Code of Conduct and Aquatics specific policies.

  • Attend mandatory in-service training on a monthly basis, if teaching or quarterly basis if only coaching.

  • Work with Head Swim coach to attain Coach Certification and learn Swim Team systems (computer/web page/ etc.).

  • Must attain the YMCA Swim Lesson Instructor certification within 120 days of hire, if do not hold coach certification or teaching other than swim team.

  • Maintain certification level of physical and mental readiness.

  • Responsible for recertification before expiration.

  • Actively participate in training sessions, designated meetings, and special events.

  • Adhere to all Department of Health, YMCA of Greater New York, and funder standards, expectations, and regulations.   


Desired Skills & Experience:

  • High School diploma or equivalent; College degree preferred.

  • Minimum of one (1) year of coaching experience.

  • Current CPRO, First Aid and Emergency Oxygen certifications.

  • Current YMCA Lifeguard certification or equivalent (attain YLG within 90 days of hire).

  • Demonstrate swim strokes, lifeguard rescues and CPRO/FA/EO skills.

  • Knowledge of Hy-Tek team manager system preferred.

  • Must be willing to work flexible hours, including weekends and holidays.
