The Flatbush YMCA is looking for a Music Instructor will be responsible for conducting safe, fun, and effective music programs, in accordance with the standards and guidelines established by the YMCA of Greater New York. The Music Instructor will serve as a resource for participants to achieve goals and a sense of well-being.

Key Responsibilities:    

  • Ensure the health, safety and well-being of children and adults in the program by providing close supervision of all activities.
  • Create an atmosphere in which all participants can have fun, are safe and learn the importance of good principled musicianship.
  • Prepare activity/lesson plans in advance and submit to Music Coordinator.
  • Set up classes as required.
  • Teach music theory, the rules and fundamentals pertaining to the instrument being taught.
  • Enable students to take part in Recitals, NYSSMA, H.S. & College Auditions, as well as other music festivals, competitions and performances.
  • Provide information on rent and leasing of instruments.
  • Inform immediate supervisor, on a daily basis, of any concerns or problems regarding participants and facilities.
  • Provide students with the tools and skills to be successful musicians.
  • Actively participate in training sessions, designated meetings and prepare students for special events and showcases.
  • Maintain supplies and storage of equipment.
  • Maintain accurate program documentation (incident reports, accident report, behavior report, attendance & sign-in / sign-out sheets).
  • Other activities and duties that address the ongoing health and well-being of our staff and members.
  • Follow and maintain sanitary habits in accordance with CDC guidelines.

Desired Skills & Experience:    

  • High School diploma or equivalent, some college preferred.
  • Ability to play more than one instrument is preferred.
  • At least one year of successful music instruction experience with children and adults.
  • Performance experience preferred. 
  • Should have Classical and/or Jazz training.
  • Should be extremely knowledgeable in music theory.
