The Jamaica YMCA is seeking a Mechanic. Under the direct supervision of the Building Engineer, the Mechanic will be responsible for the maintenance and repair of HVAC, plumbing, electrical, and carpentry systems at the Jamaica YMCA and its off-sites as needed. The Mechanic will perform building repair, maintenance, and cosmetic upgrades as directed. They will also clean and maintain the inside and outside of the YMCA and its off-sites, including but not limited to residential floors, sidewalks, hallways, stairways, rooftops, bathrooms, shower rooms, offices, and all program areas. The Mechanic will supervise and assign tasks to all overnight YMCA and outsourced staff.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Serves as the overnight FLSD as needed.

  • Performs repairs and preventive maintenance on HVAC, plumbing, electrical, carpentry, and swimming pool equipment (where applicable).

  • Performs building repair work as directed by branch leadership. 

  • Cleans all bathrooms, classrooms, locker rooms, the Fitness Center, the Free Weight Room, offices, the Gymnasium, and all other spaces within the branch, including residential floors.

  • Stores all deliveries, moves furniture, sets up and breaks down rooms, and removes snow.

  • Strip and wax floors and shampoo rugs as needed.

  • Informs building engineer of all building issues and generates incident reports.

  • Responsible for painting when assigned.

  • Follow the standards of the DOH, DOB, FDNY, HPD, and ECB Departments.

  • Other duties as assigned.


Desired Skills & Experience:

  • High School diploma or equivalent required.

  • Three (3) – five (5) years of maintenance and building construction work experience with progressive responsibility.

  • Knowledge of cleaning methods and equipment, along with a basic understanding of the upkeep and care of equipment.

  • Understanding of cleaning compounds and chemicals and their safe, efficient use (MSOS).

  • Maintain FDNY, DOB, and DOH logbooks as required.

  • Must be able to maintain the pool, including reading, repair, and maintenance.

  • Current Fire Safety Director certification or obtain the Fire Safety Director Certification within one (1) year of attaining the position.

  • Obtain Building Certification within three (3) months of attaining the position.

  • Must obtain S12, S13, and C42 Pool Certification within one (1) year of attaining the position. Subject to mid-year and annual review.

  • Must be able to work flexible hours as well as overnight. Must be on call 24/7 when the Property Manager is not on site

  • The ability to maintain and adjust controls, systems, preventative maintenance, and repair.

  • Must be available from 2:30 pm to 10:30 pm on weekdays, weekends, and holidays. Hours are subject to change based on operational needs.
