Institutional Giving Manager
Salary: $60,000- $80,000

The Institutional Giving Manager will report to the Vice President of Development and in close partnership with the SVP and Chief Development Officer, the Institutional Giving Manager participates in a comprehensive corporate and foundation fundraising program for the YMCA of Greater New York’s youth education programs. Responsibilities include identifying new funding opportunities while renewing existing grants whenever possible; communicating directly with foundation representatives to discuss potential requests; and preparation of well-written grant proposals, applications, reports, budgets and other correspondence.
- Manage and grow a fundraising portfolio of foundation donors, focusing on support for K-12 education, including teen leadership and college readiness programs. Due to the multi-faceted nature of the Y’s K-12 educational programs, funding opportunities should also align with specific curriculum strands that could also include career development opportunities, health activities and community engagement initiatives.
- Execute writing assignments as directed, including writing highly competitive K-12 grant proposals and applications, budgets, gift acknowledgments, donor correspondence, internal briefing memos and grant reports and adhering to all deadlines.
- Manage stewardship of active grants in the fundraising portfolio, including check-in calls with foundation program officers, invitations to site visits and the Y’s signature events and any other activities that will strengthen the relationship between the Y and its grantors.
- Develop strong relationships with foundation grant officers.
- Manage foundation prospecting efforts; participate in the ongoing expansion of the donor base at all levels through prospect identification and screening and research.
- Participate in developing the fundraising strategy for the overall annual corporate and foundation goal as well as specific K-12 programs and projects.
- Track and report on portfolio performance metrics and prepare regular update reports, measuring progress toward goal against projections.
- Work collaboratively with Youth and Community Development, Public Affairs and Finance colleagues to develop program descriptions, budgets and other materials as required for proposals and reports.
- Represent the Y as needed at foundation meetings and CFR sector events and professional development activities.
- Proactively follows current events, public policy and maintains an in-depth knowledge about subjects that are important for persuasively positioning the YMCA of Greater New York’s programs, services and projects, particularly in the K-12 education space.
- Other activities and duties as needed that address the ongoing health and well-being of our staff and members.
- Follow and maintain sanitary habits in accordance with CDC guidelines.
Desired Skills & Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree or minimum 3-5 years of grant writing experience with heavy focus and success in securing K-12 grants
- Master’s Degree in Early Childhood Education (or a related field), a plus
- Familiarity with funding opportunities and application processes in the K-12 space and experience identifying scalable and creative solutions within existing Y programs that may align with the objectives of various Foundations.
- Excellent judgement along with strong and flexible critical thinking.
- Proficiency in database programs required (Salesforce, Blackbaud, etc), as well MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
- Working knowledge of research resources for foundation fundraising.
- Desire to be part of a dynamic, fast-paced, collaborative, results-oriented team.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and prioritize multiple deadlines.
- Excellent organizational skills with a high attention to detail.
- Healthy appreciation for the Y’s mission.
- Excellent writing and communications skills required. Finalists will be required to submit 3 writing samples (including at least 2 grant proposals) and complete one short writing exercise during the final interview.
- Ability to manage a portfolio of prospects and oversee both grant writing and building and maintaining relationships with institutional prospects and donors.
- Solid quantitative skills to work on budgets, the narratives about those budgets, and required financial reports.
- Ability to understand and articulate institutional accomplishments and goals.
- The intelligence, maturity, and sound judgment necessary for interacting with a variety of constituencies (including corporate and foundation representatives and senior leadership of the Association Office) and for developing new initiatives in consultation with appropriate Y staff members in a variety of offices and departments.
- Proven time management skills with the ability to anticipate and manage multiple deadlines effectively.
- Strong budgeting acumen for preparation of grant proposals and reports.
