SALARY: $30.00 P/H
PART-TIME / TEMPORARY
The YMCA of Greater New York is here for all New Yorkers — to empower youth, improve health, and strengthen community. Founded in 1852, today the Y serves a diverse population of more than half a million New Yorkers who learn, grow, and thrive through programs and services at our 24 branches. Community is the cornerstone of the Y. Together, we connect active, engaged New Yorkers to build stronger communities.
As part of our mission to strengthen community, the Y’s Public Affairs team has led a number of civic engagement activities in recent years and is part of various coalitions organized to strengthen New York City’s response to the 2020 census. The Y is now seeking a Census Coordinator who will work with the Public Affairs team, YMCA branches, and external partners to build awareness and mobilize census response efforts citywide.
You are a motivated person with a BA / BS degree and a strong interest in community organizing and/or civic engagement. You are an outgoing, collaborative person with strong communication skills and the ability to smoothly manage disparate tasks. You are as comfortable working in an office environment as you are working with partners in the field. You can lead a team to execute a project effectively. You understand the process for the 2020 census, are familiar with New York City, and preferably have skills in one of the top languages spoken here. You are aligned with the Y’s mission and four core values: honesty, caring, respect, and responsibility.
As Census Coordinator you will:
- Identify, reach out to, and cultivate relationships with community and government partners
- Coordinate implementation of citywide YMCA census plan, including distributing educational materials, hosting community talks, and organizing pop-up census centers
- Track and compile data from multiple project sites
- Supervise 6 short-term project staff
The position is anticipated to run from June 2019 and end in July 2020. The exact dates and work schedule are flexible, provided you can work approximately 18 hours each week.
Through this position you can play a pivotal role in activating and empowering New Yorkers, especially in Hard to Count neighborhoods, to be more accurately counted in the census and better understand the value of civic engagement.
