Talcott BOLD/GOLD, an exciting spin on our traditional sleepaway program, combines the very best of a summer at Talcott with exciting team building activities, leadership development, and awesome adventure trips designed especially for our oldest campers. BOLD/GOLD (Boys/Girls Outdoor Leadership Development) is a program run at YMCA camps across the country and is designed to bring together young high school students from all different walks of life to grow and learn together in a fun and challenging way.
One-week Session – July 8-July 14
This trip offers a great introduction to outdoor adventuring. During the first couple of days, campers will reside at Camp Talcott, engaging in teambuilding, leadership development, and mastering outdoor living skills. The session will culminate in a two day, one night camp experience in the Delaware Water Gap National Park. Activities will include canoeing, hiking and white water rafting on the Delaware River.
One-week Session –
July 15-July 21
After several days on-site at camp engaged in both traditional and adventure camp activities, we will head out for a two day, one night camping experience in Minnewaska State Park. Our itinerary includes one day of tubing on the Delaware River and a day of rock climbing and hiking in the beautiful Shawangunk Mountains.
Two-week Session –
July 22-August 4
This two week trip offers two exciting excursions away from camp. In the first week, we will make a 3-day, 2 night canoe trip down the southern section of the Delaware River. The Delaware is known for its gentle currents, beautiful shoreline scenery, and especially for the bald eagles that nest along its shores. After a chance to rest up at Camp Talcott for the weekend, we will depart on a second 4-day, 3 night backpacking trip along the Appalachian Trail. This section of the historic trail will take us up and through the highest elevation in New Jersey for beautiful panoramic views of the surrounding hills.
One-week Session – Aug 5-Aug 11
This one week session begins on-site at Camp Talcott, where campers will swim, canoe, hike, and participate in a range of teambuilding and traditional camp activities. On Thursday morning, we will embark on an overnight backpacking experience in Promptom Lakes State Park. Over the course of two days, we will hike 15 beautiful miles alongside the Lackawaxen River. A popular site for canoeing and fly-fishing, the Lackawaxen River meanders through the Pocono Mountains in Southeastern Pennsylvania.
Two-week session – August 12-25
Celebrating the incredibly rich natural diversity around us, this two week session will take us to not one, but two different mountain ranges! In the first week, we will spend 2 days whitewater rafting and hiking the Lehigh River Gorge, in the beautiful Pocono Mountains. After a relaxing weekend back at Camp Talcott, we will embark on a three day backpacking trip in the gorgeous Catskill Mountains. The hike will end with an exhilarating day of zip-lining at Hunter Mountain.
Our primary focus for these adventures, as well as our other programs, is safety. All of our trip leaders are over 21 years of age and have significant experience in a wide range of adventure and wilderness-based activities. Additionally, our trip leaders and counselors receive two weeks of training prior to the start of the summer that focuses on working with children and ensuring safety in an outdoor environment. To ensure the safety of our campers while out of camp, our adventure staff are also certified in Wilderness First Aid/Responder, Lifeguarding, and CPR for the Professional Rescuer.
BOLD-GOLD campers spend a portion of their time on-site at Talcott engaged in team building, leadership training, and learning outdoor living skills and a portion of their time on adventure trips, using their new skills and strengthening the bonds they have made with their fellow campers. The length of time spent off camp depends on whether they are enrolled in a one-week or two-week trip.

Specific information about destinations and travel plans are not posted on-line to protect the safety of our campers. Detailed itineraries can be obtained by calling the camp office at 845-858-2200.
Nutrition is an important element of each trip. Healthy and nutritious meals are provided by our food service professionals and prepared by trip leaders following New York State Health Department regulations. In keeping with this program’s emphasis on leadership and responsibility, campers participate in the planning, packing, preparing and clean-up of every meal. Morning, afternoon, and evening snacks are also provided. Vegetarian options are available at each meal, and all other dietary restrictions can be accommodated.
All equipment used by the larger group–tents, tarps, cook stoves, etc–will be provided. Campers only need to pack their personal gear and equipment (e.g., sleeping bag, clothing, toiletries).
