As a part of the YMCA of Greater New York, we share the Y’s mission to be here for New Yorkers–to empower youth, improve health and build community. As a summer camp and outdoor education center, we serve not only New Yorkers but also children, families and schools from all over the northeast and around the world. And we do so in a different way than your neighborhood Y. But our goals are very much the same.
Nothing is more empowering for a child than to learn to do something–especially something big–all by themselves. Sleeping away from home for the first time can be scary, for kids and parents. But success at camp means becoming more independent. It means learning to live and play cooperatively with others. Led by caring counselors, campers share responsibilities, take turns leading activities, and work together as a team. We believe camp has a lasting impact on kids; that this one-of-a-kind experience provides personal growth and prepares them to be successful adults.
Kids need exercise, lots of fresh air, the chance to get dirty, make mistakes, be loud and be silly. They need to sleep soundly after a full day and gather around a big table to share a delicious meal, great conversation, and lots of laughs. They need to unplug and take a break from the technology that saturates their lives. Camp provides all of these opportunities on a daily basis in a fun and supportive environment.
Our campers and staff come from all five boroughs of New York City, across the United States, and from over 20 countries. Our campers and counselors come from every income level, and represent a richly diverse set of ethnic, religious, and cultural backgrounds. We intentionally build a community where every child feels welcome and valued, and where our differences enrich our experience. Living and playing together at camp helps kid to learn that it is the things we share–camp traditions, values, and friendships–that matter most and create bonds that last a lifetime.
We are the Y.
